Research theme 3: Potential occurrences and parameter measurement protocols for detection and predictions of harmful algal blooms in Tjärno Bay, Sweden
Harmful algal blooms (HAB), are natural phenomena that have negative effect on water bodies such as hypoxia, loss of biodiversity, and deterioration of overall water quality. The project will focus on Tjärnö Bay in Sweden, using a field pilot study and lab experiment, we will determine a temperature range in which, combined with other predetermined environmental conditions, phytoplankton species will thrive and form a (harmful) algal bloom in the Tjärno Bay. The aim of this experiment is to understand which harmful algal bloom species is the most prominent in the bay of Tjärno, Sweden and which conditions are optimum for this species to form an algal bloom as well as which parts of the bay is more prone for development of algal bloom.
