Research theme 4: Effect of temperature on the feeding behaviour of shrimp (Palaemon sp.) in the presence of a predator and a competitor.
Animal behavior can vary depending on many factors. Temperature, competition, and predation risk are only a few of the drivers that can influence the behavior of animals. The aim of this project is to assess the feeding behaviors of Palaemon sp. in response to competition, predation risk, and a projected increase in water temperature. Therefore, specimen collected in the coastal waters of Tjärnö will be transplanted into experimental tanks where they will be exposed to eight different treatments of varying behavioral drivers. Temperature rise will be simulated by increasing the temperature of the water in half of the tanks to 30°C. Competition will be simulated by exposing half of the shrimp to a competitor of the same species. Finally, a specimen of Carcinus maenas serves as a predator. Eight replications of each treatment will be conducted and feeding behavior and intra- and interspecific interaction will be recorded.
